We purchased this at a toy retailer for our family for Christmas. We chose this particular machine because it had an iPad dock and featured an app for use. It also had a video-out feature for following scrolling lyrics on our TV (which was SUPER important to us, since our kids -- and us -- don't always know every word to every song).
We pre-loaded the Singing Machine App on Christmas Eve, and were even pleasantly surprised at the amount of songs included in the App for free (51 total, thus earning the one star in this review). Then upon unboxing and hooking the machine up for use, we discovered that the video wasnt working.
After studying the instructions, we found this disclaimer: "NOTE: Video out will NOT work while using any Apps, including the Singing Machine Mobile Karaoke App." SERIOUSLY!!
So, if you want to use video with the iPad, you're going to need glasses to read the lyrics because the App is poorly built and the scrolling lyrics are SMALL.
The product box (at least to us) is quite misleading. You're made to think that you can dock in your iPad, pop open their proprietary App and sing along with up to 8,000 songs and lyrics (with subscription to their service, of course) by using video cables. However, you'll have to sit with your face 6 inches from the iPad screen if you need the assistance of scrolling lyrics.
TERRIBLY disappointing! We've since returned the machine and are still in search of a better alternative.
We'd consider re-purchase if the App developers fixed this important detail.

Maybe I got a bad one, but the microphone volume is incredibly low and you can't hear yourself very well at all. I've turned the mic volume all the way up and increased/decreased echo with no effect. The music volume is wonderful but what's the point if you can't hear yourself? The iPad integration is brilliant and works like a charm. I even plugged my professional Sennheiser microphones into the machine to see if a better microphone would effect the mic volume but it did not. I got this machine at Target and will be returning it.

I was sooo excited about this product because santa had also brought an ipad and the items were supposed to work together. I did not buy a machine with a screen because i though the ipad would be the screen.
I thought we were going to download songs from their store to the ipad, plug in and sing........
It advertises as "high quality karaoke videos streamed over your mobile network or Wi-Fi to your iphone, ipod touch, or ipad".....not so.
You can connect your iproduct through an "appropriate audio cable" thats NOT INCLUDED, or you can connect by downloading songs from their web (which i expected) THEN...

Like other reviewers, I expected to be able to download an app and start singing.
I assumed I would be charged for songs, and was prepared for that. But the app itself costs money? Isn't the app necessary for the machine to be considered a karaoke machine?
The song selection was lacking in recent songs.
The songs didn't play anyway, after I paid for them.
I came to amazon to see what others are doing to solve this issue, so their singing machine would be useable & I have come to the realization that there is nothing you can do. It's completely useless.
I will be returning it ASAP.
