Singing Machine SMG-137 CD+G Karaoke System Reviews

This Karaoke machine is not a toy. It is actually a very nice piece of electronic equipment. The sound volume coming out of the enclosed speaker is adequate. There are cables included with this unit that allow you to connect it to your 2000 Watt Sony Sound System so that you can make yourself deaf - just like a real rock star. Like the rest of the reviewers note, there is also a cable to allow you hook the unit up to a TV so that you can see lyrics. But the kid that I bought this for never uses this feature because she knows the words to all of her songs by heart and doesn't need this feature. The included microphone is what I would consider "studio quality" - it is quite sturdy and seems to have a good sensitivity. I'm sure you know, but I'm going to point that you can sing along with ANY audio CD, not just Karaoke CD's. You can also use this machine as a CD player to listen to your CD's, although the one oversight on this unit is that there is no headphone jack for private listening. This device will also work quite well as a portable Public Address (PA) System. Simply turn the music volume all the way down and the microphone volume all the way up. This a very versatile, very well made piece of equipment and it is a tremendous bargain at $51.

My daughter, 8, received this karaoke machine for Christmas. The first thing she said was "It doesn't show the lyrics like so-and-so's does." Everything works fine on it, but here were two main points that were sort of disappointing: 1. You have to plug the karaoke machine into the TV to get the graphics/lyrics up, and for those of us who still wrestle with a huge tube TV instead of a flat panel, that's sort of a pain because the plug-ins on my TV are in the back. Plus that pretty much monopolizes the living room TV. 2. The microphone isn't very loud at all. I have the mic turned ALL the way up, and to even be able to hear the singer, the music can only be turned up about 1/4 of the way. So there's no rockin' out to be had.

I have bought 2 of these machines within the last 2 years. The first one I bought stopped playing the CD's within a year. My girls have so much fun with it that I decided to buy another one. I bought the Singing machine for Christmas 2007. The girls loved it again until it just stopped playing CD's again. I contacted the Singing Machine company thinking first off, that it hasn't been a year and second off, this was the second machine I have owned in 2 years and the same thing happened. They gave me some tips and told me that the warranty was only 3 months. That alone should have been a warning to me. They also told me that I could send it in and they would repair it for $45. I could buy a new one for that! Or at least put it towards, a different brand. As much as the kids loved it, I will not buy another one from this company because I feel it is a poorly made machine.
